What Size Should A Custom Shower Niche Be?
The right custom shower niche size depends on the bottles being stored, wall depth, stud spacing, tile layout, user height, and available installation area. There is no single size that works for every bathroom. The best dimensions provide enough usable storage without weakening the wall or creating awkward tile cuts.
Width and height affect capacity, but depth and shelf arrangement are equally important. A niche that looks large on a drawing may still be inconvenient when its shelves are too short for pump bottles or too shallow for wide containers.
Measure the Items First
Start by measuring the tallest, widest, and deepest toiletries that will be placed in the niche. Shampoo bottles with pumps often need more vertical clearance than ordinary containers. Soap, razors, and small accessories may be easier to organize on a separate shelf.
Allow additional space above the tallest bottle so it can be lifted out without hitting the shelf. The internal dimensions should be used for this calculation—not only the external dimensions of the stainless steel insert.
Check the Wall Before Setting the Size
Wall construction can limit both width and depth. Studs, plumbing lines, electrical cables, waterproof boards, and back-to-back rooms may occupy the proposed position.
A niche opening should not be cut until the contractor confirms that the location is clear and structurally acceptable. Altering framing may require professional assessment, especially when the niche is unusually wide or installed in a structural wall.

Coordinate the Niche with Tile Lines

A horizontal niche offers a wide storage platform and keeps several bottles on the same level. A vertical niche uses less wall width and can be divided into two or more compartments.

How High Should the Niche Be?
Chest-to-shoulder height is common for adult users because it reduces bending. Families may choose a lower shelf for children, while accessible bathrooms should consider the user’s reach from the intended position.
The niche should not interfere with the shower mixer, hand shower rail, grab bars, or other fittings. It should also remain easy to reach without requiring the user to step directly into a strong stream of water.
