How To Make A Cabinet?

Making a cabinet involves building a square structural box, adding shelves or drawers, fitting doors or fronts, applying the finish, and installing suitable hardware. Accurate measurements and a clear cutting plan are more important than adding decorative details too early.

The construction method changes according to whether the cabinet is made from plywood, solid wood, engineered board, aluminum, or stainless steel.

Start With the Cabinet Drawing

Measure the installation space at the top, middle, and bottom. Walls, floors, and ceilings may not be perfectly level.

The drawing should show:

  • Overall dimensions

  • Cabinet depth

  • Door openings

  • Shelf positions

  • Drawer heights

  • Appliance spaces

  • Plumbing or cable access

  • Handle locations

  • Toe-kick height

  • Wall fixing points

Determine whether the cabinet will be a base unit, wall cabinet, tall pantry, island, wine cabinet, display cabinet, or freestanding storage product.

For a run of kitchen cabinets, plan the entire layout before constructing an individual box. Corner access, appliance doors, sink plumbing, worktop joints, and walking clearance must be coordinated.

Prepare the Components

For a plywood cabinet, the main components normally include two side panels, a bottom, top supports, back panel, shelves, and front frame or edge treatment.

Mark every panel before cutting. Keep the grain or decorative finish direction consistent across visible surfaces.

Use a straight saw guide, panel saw, CNC router, or other suitable equipment to produce square edges. Holes for shelf pins, drawer slides, hinges, and connectors should be positioned from one reference edge.

A small measurement error repeated across several components can cause doors, drawers, and cabinet runs to become misaligned.

For metal cabinets, the flat pattern must account for bending allowances, folded edges, welding positions, reinforcement, and hardware preparation.

Assemble the Cabinet Box

Begin on a flat work surface.

Join the side panels to the bottom and top supports using suitable screws, dowels, confirmat fasteners, biscuits, or cabinet joinery. Check both diagonals before tightening the complete structure.

Equal diagonal measurements indicate that the box is square.

Install the back panel according to the cabinet design. A properly fitted back helps keep the cabinet square and provides additional rigidity.

Do not rely on a thin decorative back panel to support a heavy wall cabinet. Wall-mounted products require structural hanging points and fasteners suitable for the wall.

Fit Shelves, Drawers, and Doors

Adjustable shelves provide flexibility, while fixed shelves can strengthen the structure.

Drawer openings should be designed around the slide system. Side-mount, undermount, and concealed slides require different clearances.

Before installing drawer fronts, verify that each drawer box moves freely and remains square. Set consistent gaps between adjacent fronts.

Cabinet doors can use concealed hinges, pivot hardware, continuous hinges, or other systems. Concealed hinges usually allow adjustments in several directions, making it easier to align doors after installation.

Check:

  1. Door gap

  2. Overlay or inset position

  3. Hinge clearance

  4. Handle alignment

  5. Drawer travel

  6. Shelf loading

  7. Soft-close operation

  8. Contact with surrounding walls

Complete a full functional test before applying final protective packaging.

Finish and Install the Cabinet

Wood cabinets may be painted, stained, laminated, veneered, or clear-coated. Preparation normally includes cleaning, sanding, edge treatment, and sample approval.

Stainless Steel Cabinets may use brushed, polished, colored PVD, or other controlled finishes. Visible surfaces should be protected during assembly and transport.

During installation, level the base units before joining them together. Shim where necessary and fasten adjoining cabinets through suitable structural areas.

Wall cabinets must be fixed into studs, blocking, masonry anchors, or an approved support rail. Do not attach a loaded wall cabinet only to weak decorative wallboard.

After installation, adjust all doors and drawers again because transport and site conditions can change alignment.
